AURAL SPACES 2024 - SPACE AS A COLLECTIVE SONIC INSTRUMENT

4D SOUND WORKSHOP FOR PROFESIONAL MAKERS

WORKSHOP INFO

In collaboration with sound artists Robin Koek and Fani Konstantinidou (substituting for Mint Park), FIBER Festival hosted an ambitious and engaging workshop as part of the Aural Spaces 2024 educational programme. Titled "Space as a Collective Sonic Instrument", the workshop explored listening and sonic composition through the lens of spatial sound.

Adopting a collective approach, participants worked together to gather sounds from within the Concertgebouw building, investigating the acoustic properties of the space and its potential as a sonic instrument. These explorations culminated in the creation of a spatial composition using the 4DSOUND system—a multichannel spatial sound system—presented in the Recital Hall of the Concertgebouw on December 12th, 2024.

“the walls have ears, and they are listening”

"When a sound is played in the halls of the Concertgebouw, it scatters and reflects; bringing an otherworldly resonance. In this process, sound decays, and a piece is inevitably lost and absorbed into the walls of the building. What do these decaying sounds sound like? What do we hear when we listen as the walls do?

Imagine this composition as a spatiotemporal inversion of the building; from the perspective of a small critter; scrambling their way through the walls, the pipes, electrical cabling & mechanical infrastructure.

To listen through the unheard ears of the building; an attempt to get in touch with the building's voice. A voice which acknowledges and shares the memories ingrained in its walls. To intentionally remove ourselves from a sonic aesthetic modernity that is imposed through the architecture and cultural historical context of the building." ( Text by Jason Clark)

Spatial sound piece by Jason A. Clarck, Xico Ribas and
Bea Alvarez

Duration:
8’

Sonic material: pipes recorded with LOM “Geofón”, ambient sounds from Concertgebouw building recorded with Zoom H5 processed in Ableton Live and then mixed in  4DSOUND software.
